Biography: Dr. Douglas R. Bacon was born in Buffalo, New York. He did his undergraduate work at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, earning a Bachelor of Science in Medicinal Chemistry and a Bachelor of Arts in history. Medical School at SUNY at Stony Brook followed, earning his M.D. in 1985. Doug interned at Millard Fillmore Hospital completing a year of internal medicine, followed by his residency in anesthesiology at the SUNY at Buffalo Affiliated Hospitals. After residency he became a diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology, and while working full time as an anesthesiologist at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, he completed his Master of Arts in History at SUNY Buffalo. Dr. Bacon currently is Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi where he is the chair of perioperative services committee for the medical center. His bibliography includes over seventy peer reviewed publications, five books, twenty-eight book chapters, and numerous other publications. Doug’s research focuses on the history of anesthesiology and professionalism. He was awarded the 2012 Laureate in the History of Anesthesiology by the Wood Library-Museum.
