Biography: Yoo Kuen Chan practises obstetric analgesia and anaesthesia in the Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Her main mission is to improve care for parturients whether during normal delivery or operative delivery. The strategy is to have providers realise the importance of better evaluation, good planning and focused commitment to an appropriate level of care especially in the high-risk parturient. In order to achieve this she has spent the last 30 years focusing providers on what needs to be done through her teaching and her publications on the subject. She has edited 4 books both on obstetric anaesthesia and acute care, numerous national and international chapters in several obstetric and non-obstetric anaesthesia books and publications in referred journals. She has also travelled widely to share her thoughts in obstetric analgesia and anaesthesia in many international meetings around the world. Her last major commitment was in the obstetric section of the World Congress of Anesthesiology in Buenos Aires, Argentina in March 2012. She was instrumental in collaboration with Stephen Gatt and Alex Sia in bringing the Obstetric Anesthesia and Analgesia – Practical Issues to fruition in 2012 where the book was launched in the previous World Congress. She is in the Education Committee of the World Federation Society of Anesthesiologists, where she is a strong advocate for uplifting the level of education for both obstetric and non-obstetric care. She has also initiated a six-month obstetric anesthesia training program in her hospital in affiliation with the World Federation Society of Anesthesiologists.
