Biography: I joined the faculty at the University of Utah almost 40 years ago. For the first 30 years as an anesthesiologist I instructed residents in the clinical skills of surgical anesthesia. I also participated in many animal and human research studies, usually doing the experimental design, statistical analysis and interpretation. Since retiring from clinical practice in 2006 I function only as an applied statistician. I mentor medical students, anesthesia residents, anesthesia fellows, anesthesia faculty, bioengineering students (undergraduate and graduate), postdoctoral fellows, and bioengineering faculty in experimental design and statistical modeling. I participate in two international data analysis efforts. I am the local PI at Utah for participation in the Multicentre Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) Consortium. This international group of mostly academic medical centers has created a central database of the very granular, intraoperative electronic anesthetic record (currently over 3.5 million patient records). I am very active in the functioning and publications of the Cochrane Collaboration where I serve as a statistician and coordinating editor of a collaborative review group.
