Statement of expertise for the sub-committee: Bernhard Riedel, FANZCA, MBA, PhD, is the Director of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Australia. Previously he was Professor of Anesthesiology at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre and at Vanderbilt University (USA). He has published >200 publications (87 Peer-reviewed) and is the recipient of six research awards and two teaching awards. His research focuses on improving surgical outcomes through enhanced risk stratification (cardiopulmonary exercise testing, endothelial dysfunction), prehabilitation with exercise and haematinic optimisation, and investigating the impact of anaesthesia and perioperative stress/inflammation on cancer recurrence. He has co-edited a comprehensive textbook on “Acute Care for the Cancer Patient” and Guest edited ‘Cancer and Anaesthesia’ in: Best Practice & Research Clinical Anesthesiology. He has organized 12 conferences and delivered >50 invited international lectures, including six plenary / visiting professorships.
Biography: Bernhard Riedel, MB.ChB., FCA, FANZCA, FASE, MMed, MBA, PhD, serves as the Director, Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Australia with an honorary academic appointment at the University of Melbourne. Bernhard's collaborative research interests focus on improving surgical outcomes through enhanced risk stratification (by assessing cardiopulmonary exercise testing and assessing for underlying endothelial dysfunction) and preoperative optimization (prehabilitation with exercise therapy and haematinic optimisation). Specific to cancer surgery Bernhard’s collaborative research investigates the impact of anaesthetic technique and perioperative stress/inflammation on what may be a long-term postoperative complication—cancer recurrence.
