Biography: I am a pediatric anesthesiologist in clinical practice at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston. I trained in Cape Town, Boston and Oxford. My main focus of academic work is in Global Health. In particular, I am interested in alleviating the burden of surgical disease in low income settings. I am the director of the Division of Global Health within the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at MGH. Since 2011 I have been working with colleagues in Uganda, focusing on improving peri-operative outcomes and anesthetic training at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in the south-west of the country. Together we established an international lecture series via internet between the MGH and Mbarara, with the aim of supporting anesthesiology training. Additionally, we collaborated to introduce ultrasound guided regional anesthesia, and are developingd an electronic patient database for Mbarara Hospital, characterizing in detail the management and outcomes of surgical diseases in a representative hospital in a low income country.
