Biography: Dr. Steven Gayer is Professor of Anesthesiology and Ophthalmology at the University of Miami School of Medicine's renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute where he serves as Medical Director of Surgery and Chief of Anesthesia Services at the Miami, Naples, and Palm Beach Gardens facilities. Cumulatively, those institutions conduct over 15,000 surgical cases per year. He is Chair of the American Society of Anesthesiologists Committee on Ambulatory Surgical Care, President-Elect of the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists, Past President of the Ophthalmic Anesthesia Society, and Scientific Committee Co-Chair of the World Congress of Ophthalmic Anesthesia. Dr. Gayer is the co-editor of the Oxford Specialist Book of Ophthalmic Anesthesia, the author of the American Society of Anesthesiologists' Refresher Course on Ophthalmic Anesthesia, and the co-writer of the definitive chapter in Barashs Clinical Anesthesia. He has innovated new techniques of anesthetizing the eye and orbit, established methods of using regional anesthesia for patients with traumatic globe injuries, and pioneered the use of ultrasound-guided eye blocks. In addition to his numerous papers and editorials in the field, he has lectured, chaired meetings, conducted expert panels, and held ophthalmic anesthesia workshops throughout the world.
