Statement of expertise for the sub-committee: Anaemia before and after surgery, blood conservation, recovery after surgery and novel technologies
Biography: Dr Klein has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge for 13 years. He trained at Guy’s Hospital in London, before its medical school joined with St Thomas’ and King’s College. During his anaesthetic training in the North London Deanery, he also worked in Sydney, Australia, and Toronto, Canada. His special interests are blood conservation and peri-operative anaemia; the management of patients with pulmonary hypertension; and the impact of technological developments on anaesthesia and surgery. He is a Final FRCA examiner at the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and has edited two books, on Transplantation, and Cardiothoracic Critical Care. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Anaesthesia, and sits on the Council and Board of the AAGBI and the NIAA. He is also the Scientific Officer for the Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists (ACTA). He is currently working on a number of studies assessing the treatment of anaemia with intravenous iron with collaborative groups in the UK, Canada and Australia.
