Statement of expertise for the sub-committee: Specialist Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist
Biography: Dr. Subid Das is a Consultant Anaesthesiologist in the Department of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia, Queen Mary Hospital, the only department in the whole of Hong Kong that is exclusively devoted to the practice of this sub-specialty in Anaesthesia. Queen Mary Hospital, to which the cardiac surgical and paediatric cardiology services moved from their earlier location in Grantham Hospital in 2008, is the oldest of the three cardiac surgical centres in Hong Kong, and, therefore, has the greatest accumulated experience in this specialty. Besides the entire range of adult cardiac surgery, all of Hong Kong’s paediatric cardiac surgery, interventional paediatric cardiology, thoracic organ transplantation and long-term mechanical circulatory support are undertaken at Queen Mary Hospital. Dr. Das has, since 1994, practiced as a specialist cardiothoracic anaesthetist in Hong Kong, and was also the head of this Department at Queen Mary Hospital till very recently. He has overseen the growth and expansion of cardiac and thoracic anaesthesia services in Hong Kong, and been a key member of the teams that have been responsible for the rapid evolution of cardiac surgical, cardiology and related practices over the last two decades in this city. Thus he has been very closely associated with the development of anaesthesia for minimally invasive cardiac surgery, heart and lung transplantation, implantable LVADs and mechanical circulatory support, thoracic aortic surgery and structural heart interventions. Dr. Das and his department jointly, with their surgical and paediatric cardiology counterparts, take responsibility for patient care in the Intensive Care Unit, and are thus heavily involved in the perioperative care of their patients. Dr. Das has been responsible for the initiation and development of risk stratification in cardiac surgery in Hong Kong. More recently he has pioneered the credentialing of Cardiac Anaesthesia at the Head Office level for the whole of Hong Kong. Dr. Das is quite closely involved with various aspects of Quality and Safety in his Hospital Cluster, most notably with the implementation of safety checklists in surgery and various other interventional procedures.
